During a recent Self-Advocates of ADEC meeting, participants expressed interest in learning more about their rights when it comes to voting in Indiana. The group worked with Self-Advocates of Indiana and Leah Grandy from Indiana Disability Rights to arrange a day for Leah to come give a presentation about voting, voting rights, and how to register to vote. The event was hosted at the Gaining Grounds Conference Center in Bristol, and the organizers planned for 40-50 attendees but ended up with more than 80 people who receive ADEC services taking advantage of this amazing opportunity. It was a fantastic turn out and everyone really enjoyed the presentation.
Additionally, the Elkhart County Clerk was contacted to see if it was possible to provide voting machines for practicing, and they said yes! Three voting machines were provided with different accessibility options, providing information and hands-on learning experiences for participants. For many in the training, this was their first time seeing or using a voting machine. Thank you to everyone who was able to make this valuable day possible.
