At ADEC, we believe in empowering individuals to reach their full potential. Our Skills & Training program offers exactly that in a vibrant and supportive environment where participants can discover and utilize their unique abilities in the workplace, at home, and within the community.

Program Overview:

The Skills & Training Program is open to all individuals aged 18 or older with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are eager to develop personal independence for living and working in the community. We cater to each person’s diverse needs and goals, promoting personal growth and maximizing functional ability, independence, and exposure to daily life activities.

Our program focuses on skills within six broad domains:

Communication and Technology Skills

Community Safety

Independent Living

Transferable Skills

Recreation and Leisure

Self-Determination

These skills are taught through structured individual and group instruction, hands-on skill development stations, recreational activities, community involvement, and building relationships with local employers.

Exciting Program Updates:

Fire Department

Every Thursday, our participants head to the local Fire Department to work on janitorial skills. They tackle tasks like cleaning the kitchen, loading and unloading dishwashers, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming. But that’s not all! On Fridays, they return to clean the EMS truck and Fire Trucks. This hands-on experience not only teaches valuable cleaning skills but also instills a sense of responsibility and pride in contributing to the community.

ETHOS Center

Our participants are also making a difference at the ETHOS center in Elkhart. They assist in the warehouse by putting together kits for kids in grades K-12. This meaningful work helps our participants develop organizational and teamwork skills while supporting the education of local children.

ASL Club

Communication is key, and we’re thrilled to announce the launch of our new ASL (American Sign Language) Club! This club is open to both participants and staff, providing a fantastic opportunity to learn ASL and enhance communication with peers and staff members. It’s a fun and inclusive way to break down barriers and build stronger connections within our community.

Community Employment

We’re proud of our close collaboration with employment services. This partnership gives our participants a head start into community employment as they learn more about independent living and transferable skills. By working together, we ensure our participants are well-prepared for the workforce and equipped with the confidence and abilities they need to succeed.
