Giving Tuesday is a globally recognized day of giving, fueled by the combined powers of social media and collaboration. Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 by Henry Timms at the 92nd Street Y in New York and the co-founding organization was the United Nations Foundation, with support from BLK SHP (Black Sheep.)
The concept was based on the Principle of Radical Generosity, which states that other people’s suffering is just as intolerable as your own suffering. The only goal was a simple one, to encourage thoughtfulness and the inclination to do good in the world through monetary donations. In just ten short years, the Giving Tuesday movement has become mainstream and inspired global generosity to the tune of $500 million annually, on average. There is now also an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit of the same name that maintains an online presence year-round to inform, educate, and support the global movement.
After the commercialism of popular shopping days Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday have passed, Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to give back, built right into your calendar. It is always the Tuesday following the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, although it is now a worldwide happening. This year it will be on Tuesday, November 29th.
Giving Tuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many choose to focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. It’s also common to use #givingtuesday online, so feel free to search it on your social media platforms to find everyone who is participating.
ADEC will be celebrating Giving Tuesday 2022 in a big way this year. We are combining the day of giving with an event at our Bristol location for the public and our friends and clients. We’ll be kicking off the holiday giving season with a visit from Santa, a live remote with Froggy 102.7, crafts, snacks, games, and more. See our Facebook event page for more info.
If you can’t join us in person that day, you can still join in on the fun and spirit of #givingtuesday by supporting ADEC and your neighbors living with intellectual and developmental disabilities through online donations, and by sharing our Giving Tuesday posts on Facebook.
