At ADEC, we believe in creating opportunities that empower individuals to grow, thrive, and achieve their goals. One of the most exciting examples of this mission in action is the internship program at Gaining Grounds Coffee House, where individuals with disabilities can gain valuable hands-on experience in a welcoming, real-world environment.

Recently, we had the pleasure of celebrating the success of our newest intern, Damian—affectionately known as Buck. Over the course of 12 weeks, Buck showed up every Wednesday and Friday, bringing dedication, curiosity, and an eagerness to learn to every shift.
Throughout his internship, Buck took on a variety of responsibilities that helped him build foundational job skills and confidence. From learning how to clean and stock supplies to mastering customer service best practices, Buck quickly became a key part of the Gaining Grounds team.
His hands-on training included:
• Using the point-of-sale system and practicing basic marketing techniques
• Shelving Art by ADEC pieces and ensuring the conference rooms were clean, organized, and ready for community use
• Learning drink-making skills, including how to multitask during busy rushes
• Participating in team meetings to gain experience in communication, collaboration, and achieving shared goals
Each task helped lay the groundwork for Buck’s continued success in future employment settings.

At the end of his internship, Buck was recognized in a special graduation ceremony surrounded by his ADEC friends, staff members, and family. With smiles, applause, and heartfelt congratulations, Buck received his certificate of completion, marking a proud milestone in his employment journey.
Gaining Grounds doesn’t stop at internships! The coffee house continues to offer job shadowing experiences for other individuals served by ADEC who are interested in learning more about barista or customer service roles. These experiences offer a behind-the-scenes look at the hard work, teamwork, and skill-building that go into creating a positive café environment.
Whether it’s pouring coffee, restocking supplies, or greeting customers with a warm smile, each opportunity at Gaining Grounds is designed to foster growth, confidence, and purpose.
