ADEC’s community has been eagerly anticipating the release of the annual ADEC T-shirt, a piece of clothing that symbolizes more than just fabric and thread—it’s a canvas for creativity, a tribute to our history, and a beacon of community spirit!

The History of the ADEC T-Shirt: Honoring Charlie

The tradition of the ADEC t-shirt dates back to 2016, when a dear friend of ours, Charlie, created something truly special. Charlie, an individual who was served at our Goshen Day Program and one of our group homes, was known for his quiet nature. But once you got him talking about his favorite subjects- cars, tractors, antiques, and old records- his shyness melted away, revealing a vibrant personality. After participating in ADEC’s Ride-A-Bike event that year, Charlie drew a picture of a bicycle that captured everyone’s hearts. This simple yet unique drawing was so beloved that ADEC printed it on t-shirts, creating what is now fondly remembered as “The Charlie Shirt.”

Since then, the demand to bring back something as unique as “The Charlie Shirt” has been overwhelming. To honor Charlie’s memory and the joy he brought to so many, ADEC launched an annual t-shirt design contest in 2023, giving those we serve the chance to carry on this tradition of creativity and community.

The Art by ADEC T-Shirt Contest

The Art by ADEC T-Shirt Contest is open to all individuals served by ADEC, offering them an opportunity to see their artwork featured on our annual T-shirt. Each submission is reviewed by our ADEC Self-Advocates group, who must vote for their favorite design. The winning design not only gets the honor of being displayed on the shirt but also comes with a $300 prize and a free T-shirt for the artist.

Cassie’s Big Surprise

This year, the Art by ADEC T-Shirt Contest winner is Cassie, a talented artist from ADEC’s Elkhart Day Program. The announcement of her win was a moment of pure joy and surprise. On what seemed like an ordinary day at the Elkhart Day Program, Scott, manager of Art by ADEC, gathered the clients and staff for a “special announcement.” As the anticipation grew, Scott revealed that someone in the room had won the contest, and when Cassie’s name was announced, the room erupted in cheers and applause.

Cassie was overjoyed and surprised by the news. To make the moment even more special, her parents were there to congratulate her in person. They had secretly arranged to be present for the big announcement and hid in the back of the crowd, adding to the celebration and making the day truly unforgettable.
