Earlier this year, legislators authored House Concurrent Resolution 46 to recognize the work done to keep Hoosiers with intellectual and developmental disabilities safe and healthy during the COVID-19 health pandemic. The work Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) do on a daily basis cannot be done from a socially
distant, 6-feet-apart. “These dedicated Hoosiers are some of the unsung frontline heroes of the pandemic,” said State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart). “They deserve to not only be recognized for the work they do but be paid like the frontline workers they truly are.”

DSPs made a statewide average of $11.36/hour. While creating the state’s budget for the next two years, legislators included a $80 million investment into the DSP Workforce. This is the workforce caring for Hoosiers with intellectual and developmental disabilities every day and are paid through Medicaid waivers.
“Our direct support professionals (DSPs) are the very backbone of ADEC and the work that they do is nothing short of incredible, “ says Donna Belusar, ADEC’s President & CEO. “DSPs clock in each day with one mission in mind: providing exemplary care and critical support to the thousands of Hoosiers with intellectual and developmental disabilities. DSPs truly have a heart for service, and we hope this increase helps bolster our DSP workforce.”
