Continuing its effort to create a safe environment for employees and clients, ADEC is providing free flu vaccinations to staff.

Katrina Vargas, ADEC’s Health Service Coordinator, encourages staff to schedule their vaccine as flu season approaches. “We are heading into a season where both influenza and COVID-19 could spread at the same time,” said Vargas. “It is more important this year than ever to receive the flu vaccine … This could help protect not only you but your family and our clients.”

With the surge in COVID-19 cases, our local and national healthcare resources are stretched. Vaccinations not only protect individuals, but they also help prevent an additional flood of patients that could place a greater strain on those resources.

According to Vargas, only about half of Americans receive the vaccine each year. She notes that the virus causes “millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations, and tens of thousands of deaths.” One reason some may avoid the vaccination is out of fear of side effects. “The flu vaccine is safe and rarely causes severe reactions,” said Vargas. “In the event that they do happen, they are treatable.”
